Hello MISIC-

MISIC is pleased to welcome Jason Glass to Iowa. Jason is the new director of the Iowa Department of Education. Appointed by Governor-Elect Branstad, Jason comes to Iowa via a teaching career in Kentucky, a position with the Colorado Department of Education and a consulting position in Ohio. MISIC schools look forward to continued collaboration with the Iowa Department of Education and the development of great things for Iowa children and young adults. Mr. Glass will begin his position with the Department on January 31, 2011.

MISIC & e2020 Partnership

MISIC is pleased to announce that all MISIC members now qualify for a significant reduction in the costs of licenses with Education 2020 (e2020). Many of you have indicated interest or are currently using e2020. If you become an e2020 customer, make sure that you tell them you are a MISIC member so you can qualify for the discount. MISIC does not support e2020 with training or expertise. You will work directly with e2020 for that assistance and to purchase licenses.

Hello MISIC school administrators!

Education 2020 (or e2020) is thrilled to partner with MISIC, just in time for second semester! This means YOU can get the Cadillac online learning program at a huge discount!

Are Iowa Schools Only Buying e2020 online courses for credit recovery? No, since you never have to assign a full course and can just pick out individual lessons or units, and our curriculum covers 6th-12th grade and is aligned to IA Core, it’s being used for “school within a school” alternative education, requiring all freshmen to take a study skills mini-course (a GREAT idea), ACT Prep course as an elective, homebound students, scheduling conflicts, middle school remediation, summer school, special education (a GREAT place to get funding for this), TAG students, offering instruction for “that one student” who is making you pull your hair out, supplementing general instruction (so those of you who are doing 1:1, this just makes sense!), and even having students work on lessons (remediation or acceleration) instead of unproductive time in study halls.

But we’re already using another program. Why would I want to switch to e2020? PLEASE PLEASE call IA schools on attached reference list (http://misic.iowapages.org/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/e2020iowareferencelist.pdf) who use us. They will tell you why. For example, Missouri Valley used Odysseyware first and then switched. Hampton-Dumont and Sigourney (and about 20 others) switched from PLATO. Des Moines’ Future Pathways and Hoover High and Clear Creek Amana switched from Apex. NO SCHOOL IN THE ENTIRE STATE has bought e2020 and not renewed. No one has looked at another program and e2020 and bought the other program. THAT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF!

Top Reasons Iowa School Administrators Choose e2020:

1. Videos in EVERY lesson that show certified teachers explaining the concept…so students aren’t learning from reading boring screens like other companies.

2. Options to EASILY adjust and tailor each course to meet the school’s own scope and sequence of what lessons they teach in each course AND individual student needs (others lack this)

MISIC Members-

Our exciting new webinar delivery system is now a reality. We are starting new program called "Wednesday Webinars." It will be a program to offer professional development on Wednesday afternoons to take advantage of the many MISIC school districts who regularly schedule early dismissals on Wednesday afternoons. Please know that we think that this program will grow, and as it does there will be many opportunities for professional development via webinar for ALL member schools on ALL days of the week. Our webinar programs will be recorded for playback at a later date if the scheduled date does not work in your busy schedules.

A few technical things to know about professional development via webinar:

- We will offer two-way sound over the internet and over the telephone. Participants can hear the presenter, see the presenter's computer screen AND will be able to speak to the presenter.

- If you are planning to share the webinar with a group of people, you will need an LCD projector and speakers for your receiving computer. If you want to ask questions during the webinar, the built in microphone on your computer will do that job well.

- We recommend the Wednesday Webinar program be a program that will be shared with larges group via an LCD projector and speakers. We are limited to 100 recipients for each webinar. While you MAY allow teachers to experience the webinar at their individual computers, we will fast run out of "seats" if many of our districts take advantage of this opportunity.

- You will receive invitations from our webinar provider for these programs. All you will need to do is to click on a button in the email invitation to reserve a spot for you or for your staff. Please DO NOT reply to this e-mail to reserve a spot.

- The SCHEDULED webinars are listed below. If you have an idea for a webinar program for the MISIC membership or for your individual district, please contact the MISIC office of a member of the district support team.

Please bear with us as we master this new technology and delivery system. We are excited about the vast potential of webinars, and we hope that you will give us input to help us explore the possibilities.

Establishing Cut Scores for MAP

Hello to All!

One more message before the weekend!

It is important for us to set new proficiency cut scores for the MAP test. Connor Hood from AEA 11, manager of the HEART database, is willing to convene a group to review information and establish up-to-date proficiency cut scores for the MAP test. This group would review the history of cut scores for MAP and determine an approach that will be used to establish valid cut points for determining proficiency using RIT scores, as well as determining any supporting documentation or training needed.

We are looking for a group of 6-10 volunteers who are willing to spend a day on this task. The members of this committee should be comfortable with data, including RIT scores, percentile ranks, and so on. Parts of the conversation will include fairly technical discussions to sort out user norms, statistical error, etc. The cut points established would be helpful and useful to all districts. We will probably meet in a central Iowa location, depending on where the volunteers reside. We are looking at November 19 or 22 for this meeting.

If you are willing to volunteer for this committee, please let me know as soon as possible and also let me know which date(s) work for you.

CompassLearning Information

This fall, MISIC's Board voted to enter into an agreement with CompassLearning in order to provide districts who use their services with a discounted price. In return for this discount, MISIC has agreed to pass along information about the company. MISIC does not provide training in their product and all questions about it should go directly to the company. If you are a MISIC member who chooses to purchase their products or services, you will receive a discounted price.

NWEA Reading Resources

You may have already received the email from NWEA (see below) indicating in a change from reporting Lexiles to reporting a "RIT to Reading Range." According to NWEA, this will give us more options in looking at reading scores. The District Support Team is busily reviewing this change and its new features and determining ways that we can support you in your use of the new reading resources. Rest assured that MISIC "has your back" on this one! We'll send out more information as we have it.

NWEA Introduces New Reading Level Resources for Partners

NWEA is pleased to announce that we have expanded the choices of reading level resources we offer our partners. We're providing you with direct links to multiple sources so you can choose the reading level resource you prefer - or use them all.

While we will add many reading level resource links in the months to come, providing you with an increasingly widening range of options, the first set of links is available on our Reports Site now:

Because we're expanding our service, you'll see a change in the terms we use:

• The Lexile®* Range on your reports is now called the RIT to Reading Range.
• The Lexile® Report is now called the RIT to Reading Range Report.

When you receive your RIT to Reading Range Report, simply click on the book icon next to a student's name, as usual. You'll be taken to a page within our website showing links to all of the reading level resources to which we now provide links. Click on these links to access the resources. In the future, you will see additional reading ranges and aligned reading resources included in this report.

Curriculum Manager Server Upgrade

The first date we sent out for upgrading our Curriculum Manager servers had a conflict. We are now looking at October 14th. On that day the server will be down intermittently as server reboots will be required (approximately 5 minutes every time it is restarted periodically throughout the day).

With MISIC moving to 5 regions instead of 3, we are looking for people to be on the ballot for Region 5 Steering Committee (5 positions) and a Region 5 MISIC Board rep (1 position). We'll be voting on these folks at the annual meeting in DSM on August 4!

In the article, it says that the Iowa State Board of Education is expected to adopt the national common core curriculum in a meeting next week... From the article:

"Members of the State Board of Education are expected to adopt the national standards at a meeting next week.
If that happens, national standards will replace math and English parts of the Iowa Core Curriculum, which will be mandatory in high schools by 2012 and all public schools by 2014."

MISIC has been looking at how to align with the national standards for several months... Stay tuned!

MAP Test Tip Sheets

Hello Everyone-

If you are a member that gives the MAP test, the following information is for you.

We have posted two "Tip Sheets" you may want to use to enhance instruction based on MAP results. They can be found on the MISIC website (misic.iowapages.org) under Training Materials. When prompted for an email address type in misic and the password is together.

The first Tip Sheet, "Got Books" explains how teachers and administrators can create personalized summer reading lists for each student. The reading lists will show books at the student's reading level (based on RIT scores/Lexile levels) AND shows how to personalize the lists to each student's interests. This is a great way to keep students reading over the summer.

The second Tip Sheet, "Got Growth" explains how to use the NWEA Achievement Status and Growth Report to look at RIT growth goals to enhance instruction. This report can help teachers and administrators work together to create Individual Teacher Professional Development Plans.

Important Info about ICC Planning

Hello to All!

I am sure that you are in the midst of end-of-the-year activities, so I'll be brief!

At our last meeting, we provided you with a chart that included the components of the ICC plan and a column that indicated the POTENTIAL MISIC tools and resources that you might consider in writing your plan. This is NOT a plan -- it is intended to give your planning team some ideas of the types of resources that might be used as your team has conversations about your plan. It is important that every district select the tools and resources that fit their situation and their ICC implementation plan.

We have been asked to take down the template from the MISIC website because one district submitted it as their plan. We have been very diligent in assuring the DE and the AEA's that we are NOT writing the plans for districts, but are providing tools and resources that will assist districts in creating their ICC Implementation plans and engaging in deep, local conversations about this work.

Best wishes in your ICC Implementation planning. We hope that the tools and resources that MISIC provides are helpful in designing and carrying out your plan. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!

Saving Education Jobs

Hi to All!

I know that this is a very busy time for you. I am hoping that you can take a few minutes to contact your federal legislators about the pending bill to save jobs in education. Below is a copy of an email I received on Friday from AESA (Association of Educational Service Agencies). You may have already received this information from another source, but I felt like this was just too important to not get the word out. I have already contacted both of our Senators, my rep and even President Obama.

Here is the information:

The Senate and House are each in various stages of moving a jobs bill. In one sentence, we need you to reach out to your entire Congressional delegation to urge them to support an emergency funding provision for America's schools, to stave off impending layoffs. AESA is collaborating with AASA to ensure the strongest possible response to Congress in support of this bill.

For a little more detail, read the next two small paragraphs for a summary of House and Senate priority. Skip to the bottom of the message for talking points for both your Senators and Representatives.

SENATE: The push continues in the Senate to garner increased support for the Harkin amendment to the Senate appropriation committee's war supplemental bill that would provide $23 billion for education jobs. We ask all of our state execs to please reach out to your Senators and make sure they understand the importance of this emergency funding to America's schools. Because the Harkin proposal is an amendment and not in the base bill, we will need 60 votes to get it to pass. Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the base bill out of committee, and it will go to the floor of the full Senate. Urge them to vote for the bill when it comes to the full Senate floor, perhaps as early as the end of next week but more likely the week before Memorial Day.

HOUSE: On the House side, AASA was among a handful of education organizations invited to meet with Rep. David Obey, Chair of the House Appropriations Committee. Obey has an interest in moving a similar bill on the House side. Keep in mind, the House did move a similar bill in December, the Jobs for Main Street Act which would provide, among other things, $23 billion for education jobs. His sentiment, we did it before, we need to do it again. That said, a bill of this magnitude will only come from immense grassroots pressure. Reach out to your Representative, especially if s/he sit on the House Appropriations Committee or are a Blue Dog, and urge them to act quickly.

Here are some talking points to use as you reach out to your Senator(s)/Representative(s):
¥ America is facing an education emergency. As many as 300,000 educators are expected to lose their jobs this year.
¥ When educators lose their jobs, students lose too.
¥ These layoffs will jeopardize our children's education. They mean ballooning class sizes (up to 40 to 45 children per class), fewer counselors, nurses, specialists - those who give students the individual attention they need to succeed.
¥ On the Senate side: We need Senator ____ to vote FOR Senator Harkin's S. 3206, the Keep our Educators Working Act, when it is offered as an amendment to the Emergency Supplemental funding bill.
¥ On the House side: We need Rep. _____ to work to continue to momentum the House started in December with the Jobs for Main Street Act and urge the appropriations committee to move an emergency funding provision to save America's educators.

You can send a letter to your Senator or Representative in a few short seconds:
1. Visit the Legislative Action Center (http://www.congressweb.com/cweb2/index.cfm/siteid/AASA).
2. Pick the appropriate letter: (SENATE: Save Education Jobs; HOUSE: Support House Education Jobs Bill).
3. Click on Write Your Legislators.
4. Fill in your contact information, click Submit.

You can then make any edits you wish, click on Send Messages and you're finished.

Defining a Unit of Instruction

Hi to all!

It's cruddy out and foggy, but the good news is that it's not snowing or icing!

I have had some requests to repeat the info I shared at our ICN about defining units of study in elementary reading, esp. as it relates to which benchmarks to choose.  The following probably also pertains to other areas as well.  This is just some ideas, so use them or not!

We have been asked how teachers of elementary reading might design units of instruction, since many times reading instruction involves using multiple processes.  Following are some suggestions for determining which standards and benchmarks might be included in a unit of instruction.
1)  Think of units of instruction as blocks of time.  This might be a week or two weeks or whatever. 
2) Once a period of time is determined, then think about selecting benchmarks based on these two questions:  1)  Do I provide DIRECT, EXPLICIT instruction on a skill during this time and 2) Do I ASSESS this benchmark?  If the answer is yes to both questions, then the reading benchmark should probably be included in the unit.  If it is used, but does not involve direct instruction or assessment, then it should not be listed.  Another question that might be asked is What is the new learning that will be addressed during this unit (or block of time)?   Review and practice are not included as a benchmark.

They are now requesting proposals for presenters at the 2010 Midwest NWEA Members Seminar. It will take place on July 26 & 27, 2010 in Lincolnshire, IL.

As an incentive for presenters, Midwest has agreed to waive the registration cost for up to 2 presenters per session and the MISIC Board has agreed to pay up to $250 in expenses for up to 2 people per session as well.

Mother Nature is getting nasty again, with a prediction of significant snow for Sunday night through Tuesday. It appears that it will affect a great deal of the state. I am watching the forecast closely to determine if we will be going ahead with our ICN meeting on Monday. Since this appears to be hitting the majority of the state and may affect school closings, etc. please watch for an announcement about whether or not we will go ahead with the Monday ICN. I don't want anyone on the road if they don't have to be!

Social Studies S&B Update

Hello Everyone-

I hope you are all staying warm on these blustery days.

We now have the Social Studies standards and benchmarks loaded into the Ladders Database and Curriculum Manager.

Everyone has access to the ladders. The link is https://ladders.misicia.org. When prompted for a username it is misic and the password is together.

If you are a Curriculum Manager user, Social Studies will now show up when you "Add MISIC Benchmarks" to your units.

Hello Everyone-

I hope that you had a great Thanksgiving and are getting back in the swing of things this week.

We now have the K-12 Social Studies standards and benchmarks completed with alignment to the Iowa Core. They are posted on the Member Documents page of the MISIC website (misic.iowapages.org). When prompted for an email, type in misic and the password is together.

There are three new documents for each grade span. One is by MISIC benchmark with descriptors, essential questions, vocabulary & ICC alignment, another lists the ICC and shows which MISIC benchmarks align and the third is a quick view of just the MISIC Standards and Benchmarks.

We will also get them formatted and loaded into the ladders and Curriculum Manager as soon as possible.
